Getting a jet airborne fast meant solving an odd problem: pumping high-temperature, high-pressure air into a cold engine to warm it up without melting the hose delivering it. Union Carbide's silicone rubber, developed with the Quaker Rubber Division, handled a punishing range from -80°F to +450°F — a small material solving a real bottleneck in rapid jet readiness.
