By the mid-1950s jets were pushing past 1,500 mph, and engineers ran headlong into a new problem: the "heat barrier" created by skin friction, which could push aircraft surface temperatures past 500°F and beyond. Goodyear's ad dramatizes the challenge as literal fire from the heavens, while detailing real research into heat-resistant alloys, the "Tri-Metallic" aircraft brake, and new high-temperature compounds tested at a facility the company nicknamed the "Rim of Fire and Brimstone."
