The Air Force Academy chose the de Havilland Twin Otter (designated UV-18B) to train cadets in parachute drops — its single-engine capability essential at Colorado Springs, where the aircraft operated from small strips above 6,000 feet. The new aircraft would let the Academy's airmanship program grow from 300 to roughly 750 cadets a year.
