The Stroukoff C-134 combined a novel "Pantobase" skid landing system with boundary layer control technology, letting this Air Force transport operate from unimproved surfaces — snow, ice, sand, even water — without conventional runways. It's a fascinating dead-end of aviation engineering: an ambitious answer to a real logistics problem that never became mainstream.
